South Ripley graduate shot by police in Kentucky

Georgetown, Ky. — A report from WKYT in Lexington, Kentucky says Joel Pflum, 32, of Georgetown, Kentucky, South Ripley High School graduate, was shot by police during a domestic incident last week.

A report from the Georgetown Police Department says Pflum broke into the home of his ex-wife with several weapons. The woman and her male companion were able to flee and call police while a child slept in the home. The coroner says Pflum died from a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

When police arrived around 12:20 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, they said Pflum was armed with two handguns. During the confrontation, the suspect was shot when he pointed a gun toward police.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that the officers responded appropriately and that the use of force was justified, and we have every reason to believe that the actions of the officers saved the lives of at least two Georgetown citizens,” Bosse said.

Records indicate police were called to the residence on several occasions.

Pflum was a Veteran of the United States Navy, having served three tours on active duty during Operation Iraqi Freedom, as a 2ND Class Petty Officer; until his Honorable Discharge on June 2, 2013.
