It took extra innings, but the South Ripley varsity baseball got the win in extra innings, defeating Waldron 4-3 Friday evening.
In his first career start, Freshman Mason McKnew gave up 3 runs and 3 hits, striking out 9 Mohawk batters in 6 innings of work.
Sophomore Braxton Wilson picked up the win for the Raiders, pitching a scoreless final two innings to pick up his second win of the young season.
South Ripley scored three times in the bottom of the 1st, highlighted by a two-run single by McNew and a bases loaded walk by freshman Trevor Castner.
Waldron scored two in 3rd and one in the 4th to tie the game, and the score remained that way until the bottom of the 8th. With one out in the inning, McNew was walked, Ryan Gorrell was hit by a pitch, and Castner was walked for the Raiders. That brought up sophomore Brady Ruble, who was hit in the foot by a pitch, bringing in McNew from third for the winning run.
McNew was the top hitter for the Raiders, finishing the game 2 for 2 with 2 RBI and 2 walks.
South Ripley improves to 2-1 on the season.
