Some students qualify for free tax preparation

Indianapolis, In. — Thousands of college students may qualify to file their state and federal income taxes electronically for free using INfreefile, a service available through the Indiana Department of Revenue.

INfreefile allows qualifying taxpayers to file tax returns using the same question-and-answer style vendor software many pay to use – making tax filing fast and easy. Most taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of $66,000 or less qualify for INfreefile. More information is available here.

Electronically-filed returns usually have a two week of processing time versus up to 12 weeks for paper forms. E-filing is also more secure and accurate, with an error rate of only two percent.

The Indiana Department of Revenue has launched two new web pages designed to help Indiana college students file their Indiana tax returns.  The pages have easy-to-understand lists of tax terms, tax tips, residency requirements and more information for U.S. residents and international students studying in Indiana.

“Many young adults file their first tax returns while in college. Providing them with additional resources to help guide them through this tax season is just one part of our ongoing push to deliver excellent customer service to Hoosiers,” said DOR Commissioner Adam Krupp.

Indiana residents whose wages and other income is $1000 or more need to file an Indiana tax return. Non-residents are required to pay taxes on any income earned in Indiana and need to file an Indiana tax return based upon their residency status. More information is available here.

International students can get specialized information on tax filing requirements here.

Even if a third-party such as a parent prepares the tax return, the taxpayer is still ultimately responsible for the accuracy, timely filing, and signature or electronic authorization on the tax return. The DOR offers forms which would allow a parent to talk to an Indiana DOR representative (Schedule 7, POA-1) with the student’s permission.
