(Batesville, IN) – Batesville City Council chambers were packed Monday night when the Skatepark Advocacy Group and community members made a pitch for funding Phase 2 of the skatepark, also known as the Outdoor Adventure.
Plans call for the construction of a Bouldering Wall, a Pump Track, a shelter, and a restroom.
Ben Peters (pictured) with the Batesville Skatepark Advocacy group and others touted the venue’s success in attracting skateboarders from out of state since the grand opening and ribbon cutting in late April.
They added a number of those visitors stay in town to shop and eat.
In addition to economic benefits, speakers told council the skatepark has helped youth with social skills, physical and mental health, and community engagement.
Supporters of all ages provided live or recorded testimonials.
The Skatepark group has secured some funds for Phase 2 through grants.
An estimated $292,385 is needed for the core portion, which is the Boulder Wall and Pump Track, while the core plus the shelter and restroom would bump the price tag to just over $441,285.
Most of the council members said Monday night was the first time they’ve heard or seen plans for Phase 2.
Council will have to consider other city projects and funding options before action is taken.
