Shirley started 2024 with heart issues that put her in the hospital in late January 2024, which ultimately led to a stent and quadruple bypass and aortic valve replacement at Cleveland Clinic on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2024. She had a short post-surgery hospital recovery, which was followed by a miraculous and full recovery over the spring months. She even traveled to Champaign, Illinois 3 times with her son in May and June, where she regained her confidence and had a lot of fun. The accompanying photo is from the last of those trips on June 21, 2024.
Once fully recovered, Shirley restarted her mission to correct her hiatal hernia. She was given awful advice and ignored by local doctors. After months of hospital and insurance miscommunications, she finally was able to meet with a surgeon at Cleveland Clinic on November 4, 2024 and he promptly scheduled her for a minimally invasive laparoscopic hiatal hernia surgery on December 31, 2024. Tragically, she had to go to the emergency room in Cincinnati on November 14, 2024 due to an extreme medical episode triggered by the hiatal hernia, requiring a very invasive surgery to save her life. She initially bounced back strong and valiantly fought through lots of extreme challenges, pain, and limitations. By February, the heavy toll of the lengthy hospital stay and multiple complications became more evident even though she never stopped fighting until the very bitter end.
There will forever by a void left in Shirley’s absence with her husband, Russell Edward Hunt (72) of Moores Hill; sons Russell Daniel Hunt (45) of Homestead, Florida and Douglas Wayne Hunt (43) of Aurora; and brother Trevis Lunsford (75) of Charlotte, North Carolina.
