STATEWIDE — New laws on everything from guns to a state fossil take effect today (Friday) in Indiana.
The state’s permitless carry or “constitutional carry” law means gun owners no longer need a permit to carry a pistol in Indiana. The new law still prohibits juveniles and convicted felons from carrying a handgun and requires anyone buying a gun from a dealer to go through a federal background check.

Another new law limits K-12 girls’ sports in Indiana to biological girls only.
Indiana’s personal income tax starts to go down from the current 3.2% to 2.9% over seven years.
And legislation authored by State Rep. Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) and passed during the legislative session that ended in March makes the mastodon the official state fossil. Until now, Indiana was one of just five states without a state fossil.
