Scammers taking advantage of grieving community

Columbus, IN — Even in the hardest moments, scammers find ways to take advantage. Sheriff Matt Myers with the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office stated the department is humbled by the community’s outreach in response to the ultimate sacrifice K9 Diesel made a little over a week ago. Sheriff Myers reports that the  Bartholomew County Humane Society, Dog World, and local Veteran’s organizations have volunteered to host fundraisers for a memorial and to sustain the K9 Program in the area. He thanks all the organizations, as well as hundreds of citizens, have sent cards, well wishes, prayers, personal items to the Sheriff’s Office and Deputy Matt Bush.

Unfortunately, the sheriff’s office has been alerted to a possible scam of someone stating they are a supporter and attempting to raise funds on Spot Fund or Go Fund Me. Sheriff Myers wants to alert the public that they have not endorsed or support these online activities and asks the community to not fall victim to the scam.

If anyone would like to drop off a card or other donation items, please bring it to the front desk at the Sheriff’s Office or mail it to 543 2nd Street, Columbus. If anyone has questions please send them to Deputy Dana Vogt at [email protected].
