ST. LEON, IN — The Sunman-Dearborn School Board and a local group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for future use of part of the former North Dearborn Elementary School site.
The agreement was reached at last Thursday’s school board meeting.
“What we determined is that we’re going to set aside about seven-and-a-half acres of that property for the North Dearborn Community Park organization to develop it into a park,” said Superintendent Dr. Andrew Jackson.
He says the MOU calls for the school corporation to lease the land to the group at zero cost for 20 years, and the organization has two-and-a-half years to raise funds and develop the park.
Initial plans call for a playground and trail, with the possibility of other features being added in the future.
Jackson says there is room on the 24-acre site for both the park and for possible future school programs.
With the MOU in hand, Jackson says the group can start fundraising and writing grants to build the public park on the property along North Dearborn Road in Guilford.
Dr. Jackson appeared on Friday’s edition of The Daily Pod on 103.9 WRBI.
