Russell S. Hobbs, 72, of Versailles passed away at 9:15 p.m., Monday, June 3, 2024 at his home. He was born in Indianapolis on April 17, 1952, the son of James D. “Scott” and Peggy Sue Moore Hobbs. He was married to Londa Neely on December 18, 1981 and she survives. Other survivors include one son Scott (Kristen) Hobbs of Versailles; one daughter Amy Hobbs of Olean; his mother Peggy Sue Hobbs of Indianapolis; five grandchildren Julieann, Heidi, Scarlet, Levi, and Hosea Hobbs; one sister Susan (Jeff) Lantz of New Palestine. He was preceded in death by his father, and his sisters Pam Giles and Beth Jones. Mr. Hobbs was a 1970 graduate of New Palestine High School. He received his Bachelors Degree from Taylor University in Upland where he also played four years of football. Russ received his Masters Degree in elementary education from IUPUI in Fort Wayne. He taught school at the Thorn Creek Elementary School in Allen County and later was principal of the Corbin Christian Academy in Versailles. He also operated a hog farm, and he and Londa grew strawberries on their farm south of Versailles. Russ was also a self-employed owner-operator truck driver for over 20 years. He was a member of the Bridge of Hope and for nine years was pastor of the Temple Baptist Church in Patriot. Russ enjoyed his grandchildren and family and was always blessed to be able to teach and share his knowledge with them. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 7 at 11 a.m. at the Bridge of Hope near Versailles. Burial will be in the old Benham Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10 a.m. until time of services Friday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Benham Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
