Robert Herman “Bob” Browning, 99, of Rising Sun, IN passed away Thursday, August 29th, 2024 at St. Elizabeth Dearborn Hospital in Lawrenceburg, IN. Bob was born in Vevay, IN on June 3, 1925, a son of the late Josephine (Bosaw) Browning and Cleve Browning. Bob grew up in Switzerland County and attended school in Vevay, IN. Bob was inducted into the United States Navy on November 22, 1943, and proudly served his country during World War II. While in service Bob received the American Area Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Ribbon. Shortly after his return from service, Bob married Grace (Griffin) Browning on January 25th, 1947 at the Baptist Church in Madison, IN. Bob and Grace were married for over 69 years until her passing on September 11th, 2016. Bob was employed at the Seagrams Distillery in Lawrenceburg, IN for 39 years. He later was employed at the Walmart in Madison, IN for 9 years. Bob was a member of the Bethel Unity Baptist Church in Rising Sun, IN. He was also a member of the Vevay American Legion Post 185 and the Hartford Masonic Lodge #151. Bob had many interests and talents. He enjoyed farming, woodworking, reading, and playing the guitar. Bob was in excellent health most of his life and took daily walks around town well into his nineties. Bob loved his family above all else and was eager to share his knowledge and experience with them. He was truly a shining example of our country’s greatest generation.
Bob is survived by his son, Wayne Browning, of Rising Sun, IN; by his grandsons, Brian Browning (Kristy), of East Enterprise, IN, and Chad Browning (Nicole), of Hanover, IN; by his great-grandchildren, Ciera Cartwright (Daniel), Cassandra Mikesell (Marc), Brandon Browning (Erin Webb) and Karissa Browning; by his great great grandchildren, Benny Mikesell, Braxton Mikesell and Grace Cartwright and by many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Grace Browning, his brothers Bill, Ralph, Don, and Harry Browning, by his sisters, Gertrude Drew, Minnie Stevens, Margaret Baker, Katie Turner, Elsie Caseltine, and Bea Williams.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, September 4th, 2024 at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, IN with Pastor James Jackson officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Wednesday, September 4th, 2024 at Markland Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will be at Vevay Cemetery in Vevay, IN.
