Police need assistance finding catalytic converter thieves

Columbus, IN—The Columbus Police Department (CPD) is asking for the public’s assistance after receiving several calls about catalytic converter thefts over the past month. Since the beginning of October, CPD says 23 reports of stolen catalytic converters have been received. Police say the thefts have typically occurred on larger vehicles like box trucks, vans, and SUVs.

A catalytic converter is an exhaust emission control device on a vehicle that reduces toxic gasses and pollutants. According to law enforcement, the procedure is for thieves to crawl under a vehicle, cut off the catalytic converter with a cordless saw, and then sell it to a scrap yard or third party.

The crimes have happened during the day and at night. CPD is asking anyone who observes suspicious activity to call them at 812-376-2600.
