Phone Scams Reported in Ripley, Decatur

(Ripley/Decatur Counties, IN) – We have a couple of reported scams to tell you about.

The Ripley County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an increase in phone scams involving spoofed government phone numbers.

Deputies say scammers are using technology to make it appear as though calls are coming from official Ripley County government lines in an attempt to gain your trust and obtain sensitive personal information.

A resident of another county recently received a call that appeared to originate from an official Ripley County Government number.

The caller then attempted to collect private medical information.

Fortunately, the resident recognized the red flags and reported the incident.

The Decatur County Sheriff’s Office says it’s been informed that a scammer claiming to be “Deputy Davenport” with the agency is calling residents and telling them they missed jury duty.

The sheriff’s office says they will never call you to notify you about something like this, and doesn’t ask for personal information, or tell you about a warrant by phone.

Deputies say you should be vigilant and never give out information over the phone, purchase gift cards for payments, or transfer funds to an unverified person.
