Paul Schoettelkotte, 86, of Columbus, Indiana, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2025, just days shy of his 87th birthday. He was born on April 16, 1938, in Batesville, Indiana, to the late John and Regina (Roehm) Schoettelkotte.
Paul was raised in the St. Peters area and carried a deep love for his Indiana roots throughout his life. He proudly served his country as a United States Marine in the late 1950s, and later dedicated 30 years of service to Cummins Engine Company. Known for his strong work ethic and attention to detail, Paul took great pride in all he did, both professionally and personally.
On August 10, 1963, Paul married Mary A. Mollaun, who survives. Together, they built a loving home and raised a family grounded in values of loyalty, love, and resilience.
Following his retirement, Paul spent much of his time at Otter Creek Golf Course, where he found great joy in the game of golf and in tending the greens he cherished. His appreciation for the outdoors was matched by his lifelong devotion to IU basketball—especially during the Bobby Knight era.
Above all, Paul was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be remembered for his quick wit and generous spirit. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures and leaves behind countless cherished memories for those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, and their children: Paul (Suzanne) Schoettelkotte, Shari (Stephen) Moody, and Jaclyn (Aleksandar) Zafirovski; sister-in-law Eva Schoettelkotte; son-in-law Brian Mulligan; and grandchildren: Lauren, Elena, and Jackson Mulligan, Delaney and Adeline Moody, Marko and Maja Zafirovski, and Henry Schoettelkotte.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Jill Mulligan; and siblings John and Maurice Schoettelkotte, Mary Bossert, Viola Fullenkamp, and Dorothy Schoettelkotte.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 18, 2025, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Father Chris officiating. A brief eulogy will be given by his grandson, Jackson Mulligan. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place privately at a later date. Military honors will be provided by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cheer Fund-Fire Department-Columbus, Indiana.
