(Switzerland County, IN) – The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down in Switzerland County on Sunday.
The agency says, based on social and broadcast media, local officials, and radar data, an EF-U tornado touched down west of Patriot around 4:30 p.m.
An EF-U tornado stands for Enhanced Fujita Unknown, which means the intensity cannot be determined due to the lack of damage.
“The tornadic circulation was fully condensed from the cloud base to the ground and exhibited sustained rotation,” said the National Weather Service in a statement. “In addition to this, the updraft of the thunderstorm exhibited rotation, increasing confidence that this was not a landspout.”
According to the weather service, this type of tornado is considered weak.
Forecasters say the twister stayed mostly within dense, wooded areas, which made it difficult to conduct ground surveys.
The weather service says there was no confirmed damage left behind by the twister.
There were no injuries reported.
