(Morris, IN) – No one was hurt in a house fire late Tuesday night on the 4800 block of East Morris Church Road.

The Morris Volunteer Fire Department says the residents and their pets safely evacuated after the kitchen stove caught fire.

Officials say the homeowner’s quick thinking to use a fire extinguisher to douse the flames kept the blaze from getting out of hand.

Firefighters determined that the flames did not spread within the walls or attic spaces of the home.

Crews remained on the scene to help ventilate smoke from the house.

“Be prepared in the event of an emergency at your own home by learning how to properly use a fire extinguisher, but always remember that personal safety should come above efforts to save property,” the fire department said in a statement.
