Myrtle Jean Halcomb Deiwert, a beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Decatur County Memorial Hospital. She was 91 years old.
Born on May 20, 1934, in Franklin County, Indiana, Myrtle was the thirteenth of fourteen children to Emerson and Nellie (Manious) Halcomb. After graduating high school, she pursued her education in bookkeeping.
On March 6, 1971, Myrtle married the love of her life, Donald Deiwert, who preceded her in death. Myrtle found joy in the simple pleasures of life, including embroidery, reading books, and solving word search puzzles. Her greatest delight, however, was holding babies; she was a devoted fixture in the nursery at Clarksburg Christian Church throughout the 1980s.
Myrtle never met a stranger and possessed a warm, welcoming nature. While she was proud of her children, her conversations invariably turned to her three grandsons, about whom she loved to brag.
Myrtle is survived by her son, Donald Deiwert, and her daughter, Kelly (Dennis) Clark. She leaves behind her cherished grandsons, Dakota Deiwert, Nathan Deiwert, and Logan Clark. She is also survived by her sister, Lorrene Peters, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Donald Deiwert; her parents, Emerson and Nellie Halcomb; her brothers, Charlie, Carl, Ernest, Walker, Robert, and Wilbur Halcomb; her sisters, Cassie Ledbetter, Verna Lessing, Winnie Wyatt, Dora Sloan, Mattie Corn, and Mabell Halcomb; and her daughter-in-law, Rebecca Deiwert.
Myrtle’s infectious spirit and boundless love for her family will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 2, 2025, at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home, beginning at 12:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Jerran Jackson. Burial will follow at Clarksburg Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Myrtle’s honor to Clarksburg Christian Church. Online condolences may be shared at www.gilliland-howe.com.
