(Cincinnati, OH) – The case of a man accused of murdering his wife in Dearborn County has moved to Hamilton County, Ohio.
Investigators believe Mohammed Mondal of Bright shot and killed his wife Stacy in front of their two children on November 6, 2023, with charges originally filed in Dearborn County.
The kids were 14-months-old and two-months-old at the time.
Dearborn County Prosecutor Lynn Deddens previously said the family was heading to Cincinnati to have photos taken when Mohammed Mondal allegedly shot his wife several times in a vehicle that he was driving on U.S. 50 near the Indiana/Ohio state line.
After the deadly shooting, investigators said Mohammed contacted a neighbor, who is a Sergeant with the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Office, and told him he accidentally shot his wife. Mohammed claimed the shooting was in self-defense, saying that he and his wife were arguing and Stacy went for the gun first.
Deddens says Mohammed drove Stacy to St. Elizabeth Dearborn Hospital in Lawrenceburg, where it was believed at first that she died there.
A jury trial was set to begin on November 12 in Dearborn Circuit Court, but a defense expert determined in mid-October that she likely died in the vehicle.
“As my office was preparing for the approaching trial, the medical evidence concerning the time of death of Stacy Mondal started to shift,” Deddens said. “The alleged time of death for Stacy Mondal is critical because a required element of any criminal offense is jurisdiction. Indiana’s statute requires that, like any element of a crime, jurisdiction must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.”
A medical examiner agreed that it was likely that Stacy Mondal died in Hamilton County.
“Although I, and others in my office, along with the Sheriff’s Department had devoted, collectively, hundreds of hours to prepare for the case; and although we had spent substantial sums of money to secure evidence and expert testimony in his matter, once I was confronted with these facts, it was my duty to provide all our materials to the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office in order to ensure that justice will be done in this matter,” Deddens added.
Mohammed Mondal was indicted by a Hamilton County grand jury on one count of aggravated murder, one count murder, and three counts of felonious assault.
He was handed over to Ohio authorities on Thursday.
