Mr. Alford Grant “Al” Pettit, age 82, of Vevay, Indiana, entered this life on September 16, 1943 in Ripley County, Indiana. He was the son of the late William Theodore and Florence Etta (Gelvin) Pettit. He was raised in Vevay and East Enterprise, Indiana, where he attended school. Al was inducted into the United States Army on April 7, 1967 in Louisville, Kentucky, serving in the Vietnam War. He received the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Expert Rifle M-14 Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Overseas Service Bar, and the Army Commendation Medal. Al was transferred to the Army Reserves on April 7, 1967 at Fort Lewis, Washington, and was later honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class on April 6, 1973. Al was united in marriage on February 12, 1978 to Naomi Blanche Brown at the Switzerland Baptist Church in Vevay, Indiana. Al and Naomi shared over 33 years of marriage together until her death on August 21, 2011. Al mowed grass in the Vevay community for several years. He was a member of the Vevay American Legion Post #185, Vevay VFW Post #5396 and the Switzerland Baptist Church. He enjoyed socializing and drinking beer at the Vevay American Legion. Al passed away at 10:25 p.m., Saturday, December 13, 2025, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay, Indiana.
Al is survived by his foster daughter, Martha Guffey of Vevay, IN; his close friend, Laura Barnett of Vevay, IN; his brother, Roger Pettit and his wife, Patricia of Cincinnati, OH; and his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Theodore and Florence Etta (Gelvin) Pettit; his wife, Naomi Blanche (Brown) Pettit; and his sisters, Dorothy Cifers, Evelyn Marie Lawson and Norma Leap.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street, Vevay, Indiana 47043.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street, Vevay, Indiana 47043.
Interment and full military rites will be conducted by the Honor Guard of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and the Vevay VFW Post #5396 in the New Liberty Cemetery, East Enterprise, Indiana.
