Oldenburg, IN — The Sisters of Saint Francis in Oldenburg are having an auction of all of their farm equipment, large and small, from Michaela Farm. The auction will be held on March 27th at 10 am. Click here for auction items.
The Sisters of St. Francis of Oldenburg have officially announced Greenacres Foundation will acquire the approximately 250 acres which comprise Michaela Farm. Through many meetings, the missions of Michaela Farm and Greenacres Foundation were found to align beautifully in promoting care for the land and all its inhabitants, displaying a similar passion for the environment and agricultural education.
Plans include continuing a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program and maintaining the availability of garden-fresh produce through the Farm Store. The Sisters expressed their gratitude to all who have supported Michaela Farm, as they warmly welcome Greenacres who will carry forward many of the same opportunities desired by the Sisters.
Michaela Farm was founded by The Sisters of St. Francis of Oldenburg in 1854 to provide food for the convent. The Farm provided upwards of 90% of the Covent’s food until around 1964. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the Sisters began to restore the farm as they built up a grass-fed “beefalo” herd (5/8 beef cow, 3/8 bison), brought back their fruit and vegetable gardens as well as a CSA to provide to the region. The farm has served as an education and training hub over the years.
