Mary E. (nee Smith) Hughes of Dillsboro passed away at the age of 91 at her residence in Dillsboro with her loving family by her side on Saturday, September 10, 2022. Mary was born on Friday, September 12, 1930 in Friendship, Indiana, daughter of Alex and Mary (nee Colvin) Smith. She married her loving husband, James H. Hughes, on November 12, 1949 and he preceded her in death on January 5, 2005. Mary was a member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church in Friendship. She was a homemaker and loved to cook for her family. She enjoyed gardening, canning and loved to sew. Her greatest passion in life was spending time with her family.
Mary will be missed by those who will cherish her memories including her sons David Hughes (Letha) of Dillsboro, Timothy W. Hughes (Donna) of Lawrenceburg, and Jeffrey Hughes (Jennifer) of North Carolina; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Mary Smith, husband James H. Hughes, son James Hughes, and brother William Henry Smith.
Family and friends may gather in remembering Mary from 5:00 – 7:00pm on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at the Filter-DeVries-Moore Funeral Home in Dillsboro. A service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 also at the funeral home, with a visitation 1 hour prior to the service, Pastor Sherman Hughes officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Memorials may be given in honor of Mary to the Dillsboro Life Squad or Charity of Donor’s Choice.
