Man arrested following pursuit through Ripley and Jefferson Counties

Versailles, IN — Thursday evening, a Madison, Indiana man was arrested after crashing his vehicle while fleeing from officers in a vehicle through Ripley and Jefferson Counties.

At approximately 6:00 pm, Sergeant Jared Black, Indiana State Police-Versailles was patrolling US 421 in southern Ripley County. He observed a black 2003 Mitsubishi traveling southbound on US 421 at a high rate of speed. Sgt. Black caught up and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. The car, being driven by Shane Melton, age 32, Madison, Indiana fled from Sgt. Black southbound on US 421 into Jefferson County towards Madison.

The pursuit lasted nearly 14 miles before approaching Madison. Melton lost control of his vehicle while attempting to navigate the round-a-bout on US 421 at SR 62. The vehicle crashed and came to a stop. Sgt. Black took Melton into custody without further incident with the assistance of the Madison Police Department and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.

Melton was transported to the Ripley County Jail where he was charged with allegations of Resisting Law Enforcement, Reckless Driving, and Operator Having Never Received a Driver’s License.
