Jefferson County, IN — A Madison woman was arrested Thursday on a number of theft-related charges following an Indiana State Police investigation that began in February, after a woman reported a family member had stolen thousands of dollars from her.
The investigation by a State Police detective revealed that 41-year-old Sherri Dorten allegedly stole money from a relative over a nearly four-year period.
ISP says evidence indicates that Dorten assumed the identity of the victim where she then obtained a loan and filed bankruptcy in the name of the victim.
She is accused of withdrawing money from ATMs and writing checks from the victim’s bank accounts.
In total, Dorten allegedly obtained thousands of dollars fraudulently by taking advantage of the family member.
At the conclusion of the investigation, the case was submitted to the Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
As a result, a warrant was issued for Dorten on charges of Defrauding a Financial Institution, Identity Deception, Theft, and Corrupt Business Influence.
Dorten turned herself in to investigators at the Jefferson County Jail.
She was placed under arrest and jailed pending her initial court appearance.
