VERSAILLES, IN — A Madison police officer was arrested Tuesday on a Domestic Battery charge following an incident that happened last month in Ripley County.
Indiana State Police say a woman went to the Versailles Post on July 11 and reported that she was battered by her live-in boyfriend, 36-year-old Brian Ashcraft, who is an officer with the Madison Police Department. The alleged incident took place at a residence they share in Versailles.
State Police say the investigation determined that Ashcraft and the woman allegedly got into an altercation on July 10, during which Ashcraft allegedly put his hands on her and pushed the woman while making threatening statements. The argument continued the next day when Ashcraft allegedly grabbed the woman’s face.
After the investigation wrapped up, the case was presented to the Ripley County Prosecutor’s Office for review, and an arrest warrant was issued for Ashcraft on a Class A Misdemeanor charge of Domestic Battery.
He was arrested without incident and booked into the Ripley County Jail.
Ashcraft has been on administrative leave from the Madison Police Department since July 11 when the incident was reported to ISP.
Police Chief John Wallace told WRBI News that Ashcraft will remain on administrative leave pending the outcome of the legal proceedings.
After that, Chief Wallace says the City of Madison’s Police Merit Board will decide whether or not he continues to be employed by the department.
Ashcraft has been with the Madison Police Department for three years.
