Greensburg, In. — Athletic trainers Sara Boyer, Amanda Mang and Steve Souder are in the running to be nominated for The 2018 – 2019 Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award. Boyer, of Brown County High School; Mang, of North Decatur Jr./Sr. High School and South Decatur Jr./Sr. High School; and Souder, of Columbus North High School, all have the chance to become the area’s Regional Nominee for the National Award. Only one athletic trainer will be selected as the Regional Nominee and will advance on to join other Regional Nominees from across the nation to be considered for The Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award. The Regional Nominee will be announced in the coming weeks.
In partnership with local leading orthopaedic practices, such as Southern Indiana Orthopedics in Columbus, The 2018 – 2019 Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award recognizes athletic trainers for the service and leadership they provide local athletic communities. Based on examples of service, leadership and shared experiences from community members, nominees for The Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award are determined regionally.

Boyer, the sole athletic trainer for Brown County High School in Nashville for the last four years, received her Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training from Purdue University in West Lafayette. She then went on to earn her Master of Science degree in kinesiology with a focus in athletic training from Indiana University Bloomington. Boyer has been involved in the sports medicine community since her high school years.
Beginning as a student athletic trainer at Crown Point High School in Crown Point, Mang now serves as an athletic trainer for both North Decatur Jr./Sr. High School and South Decatur Jr./Sr. High School in Greensburg. She holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in athletic training from Indiana State University in Terre Haute. In addition to caring for athletes, Mang also provides services at Trane, working with industrial employees returning to work.
As a certified athletic trainer at Columbus North High School in Columbus, Souder works full time to keep student-athletes active and healthy. He is a former teacher and two-time recipient of the Indiana Athletic Trainers Association’s High School Athletic Trainer of the Year Award. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, and a Master of Science degree from Indiana University Bloomington. Souder has served as a local athletic trainer for over 40 years, caring for injured athletes and educating future athletic trainers through his work.
