RIPLEY COUNTY, Ind. — On Sunday, December 18, 1966, Indiana State Trooper William R Rayner was killed during a traffic stop on I-74 east of Greensburg.
50 years later, several area law enforcement officers gathered to remember him.
Officers from the William R. Rayner Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #177 honored him by gathering at his graveside last Thursday.
During the traffic stop in which Rayner was killed, he and a deputy had stopped a vehicle they did not know contained escapees from a Kentucky State Prison.
One of the escapees shot and killed trooper Rayner.
