Indianapolis, In. — After a seven-year battle, Oldenburg Republican state senator Jean Leising can claim a small victory.
Leising has been working to get her colleagues to pass legislation that would make teaching cursive writing mandatory in Indiana schools. Now, House Enrolled Act 1420 will leave the decision up to individual school districts.
An Indiana Department of Education study done in 2017 showed about 20-percent of school districts teach cursive curriculum without the law in place.
Leising has consistently told her fellow lawmakers cursive writing is an important skill.
