(Batesville, IN) – State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg), and Representatives Lindsay Patterson (R-Brookville) and Alex Zimmerman (R-North Vernon) gave an overview of the 2024 Indiana General Assembly session during the Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce’s legislative lunch and learn Tuesday at Ivy Tech Community College in Batesville.
All three said a lot was accomplished in a short amount of time during the session, which lasted from January through early this month.
More than 700 bills were filed. One hundred and seventy-two passed, with all but one were signed into law.
House Enrolled Act 1002, also known as the antisemitism bill, was the lone piece of passed legislation vetoed by Gov. Eric Holcomb this session.
Holcomb is term-limited and cannot run again this year, which means several are vying to replace him as Governor.
Patterson is urging Southeastern Indiana residents, especially those who don’t consume Indianapolis media based on where they live, to do their homework on the candidates.
“We have a great opportunity to get a really good Governor in there. Unfortunately, a lot of us who live in these communities, we get more Ohio television, some get Kentucky television, so you don’t get a lot of the information that happens in Indianapolis,” Patterson said.
“So that’s why I’m encouraging people to do their own research, talk to your friends and encourage them to vote,” she added. “It’s a really great opportunity for Indiana.”
In addition to recapping this year and briefly previewing bills that could be considered during the 2025 budget session, all three took questions and comments from those in attendance.
