The ECVB Varsity team traveled to Bloomington South for their annual invitational on Saturday. We finished 5th overall, but that placement doesn’t present an accurate picture. We finished 2-1 in pool play, but there was a 3-way tie that went down to the 4th tie-breaker, point differential. It was a tight running, but that put Bloomington South in first, Silver Creek in second and us in third heading into cross over.
REVISED EC vs Bloomington South 8-25-18
We started slow vs Silver Creek, but were in the match most of the way through. We made some critical errors that took our momentum away in the first set, but heading into the next two, we were a completely different team. They refused to quit and were picking up anything on our side of the court. We ran our offense and stopped theirs in every aspect to come out victorious in three sets.
We played immediately following that match against a potential sectional opponent in Bloomington South. We got down 0-5 early but then flipped a switch to bounce back and take a first set win. It was a tough battle in set two which forced set three. We failed to finish, up 3-4 points at the end of the game to give us our first loss of the season. The result doesn’t tell the story though. We may have lost, but I believe we were the better team. We let a couple questionable calls take our momentum and we just couldn’t finish. But we lost that game on our own accord and we will fix it heading into the post season.
In the first two matches of the day, we played to the potential I’ve known we’ve had all season. I hadn’t actually seen it until Saturday. It was incredible to watch. The intensity, energy, communication, hustle and drive in those two matches was unmatched. It’s a shame the result didn’t give us that reassurance. But they proved they can compete with anyone and we are going to take that and run with it. These girls stopped everyone in their tracks and forced them to pay attention to what was happening on our side of the court. It was impressive to see them play as one team fighting for the same outcome.
The next two sets weren’t quite as impressive, but we managed to pull out the win. We defeated Trinity Lutheran as the last match of pool play and then Covenant Christian in the crossover. Both matches took 3 sets to get the job done. We just fell flat. We almost looked drained, but they still wanted the win. It just took a lot more work than it should have.
Overall, these girls have everything it takes to be the best team to come out of EC. They just have to continue to put the pieces together like they did on Saturday.
Varsity is now 10-1 on the season, which is the best start at EC with this schedule.
Next up: Franklin County at EC on Monday. Freshman and JV start at 5.
