The Batesville Lady Bulldogs suffered a hard-fought 3-2 loss at Shelbyville in varsity tennis action.
Three of the five matches were stretched to three sets. Unfortunately, the Lady Bulldogs failed to come out on top in any of the three. It was not without great effort.
Batesville jumped out to the early lead with a win at No. 3 singles. Senior Jenna Ertel defeated Adeline Haaker 6-3 and 6-0. The No. 1 doubles team of Betsy Harmeyer and Corinne Stone needed two sets to defeat Gabrielle Knox and Addison Mummert by the scores of 6-3 and 7-5.
Shelbyville closed the gap with a win at No. 2 singles. Batesville’s Kate Poltrack won the first set 6-4, but lost the next two 0-6 and 1-6. The Golden Bears tied the match with a win at No. 1 singles. Batesville’s Sophie Brown bounced back from a 4-6 loss in the first set to win the second 6-3. Shelbyville’s Alexandra Watson won the third and deciding set by a score of 6-4.
The Lady Bulldogs also went to three sets at No. 2 doubles. Maggie Walsman and Kayla Stone were defeated 6-3, 4-6 and 2-6 by Lilyann Gulley and Jade Roell.
The BHS junior varsity turned in a solid performance and posted a 5-0 victory.
Lily Esser was a 8-7 winner at No. 1 singles, while Caroline Kellerman and Carly Fitzpatrick won at No. 2 and 3, respectively. Vivian Shroder and Malia Scheele teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles as did Meredith McCreary and Kayla Meyer at No. 2.
