Judge denies animal rights group legal challenge on rifle order

Laporte County, In. — Laporte County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Alevizos has denied a request for an injunction on a DNR emergency order allowing rifles on public land during deer-gun season.

The Center for Wildlife Ethics and Counsel Laura Nirenberg argued the Indiana Department of Natural Resources was exceeding their statutory authority. The order was issued on November 3 as a way to fix a legislative mistake. The order expires on February 1, 2018.

The order was issued after an effort to clarify the use of high-powered ammunition during the last Indiana General Assembly, inadvertently making the use of a rifle on public land illegal.
