Lawrenceburg, In. — Ivy Tech Community College recently hosted a summer camp for Dearborn County middle school students to learn about advanced manufacturing and careers in the industry.
More than 20 students who will enter 8th and 9th grades this upcoming school year participated in June in the three-day camp, which was supported by the Dearborn Community Foundation. During the camp, students learned workforce readiness “soft skills” and conducted hands-on activities that taught them about manufacturing and its careers.
“Advanced manufacturing offers many fulfilling, rewarding careers that students can start preparing for in high school,” said Ron Eads, Ivy Tech Lawrenceburg Workforce Consultant. “We enjoy providing this learning opportunity for students to discover this industry, career opportunities, and the educational pathways they can pursue to prepare for these rewarding careers.”
Throughout the camp, students explored career opportunities in the field of advanced manufacturing; met industry and business professionals who mentored them on soft skills needed for careers, such as timeliness and professional communication; learn about the education and skills needed for a variety of jobs; and identified high school classes they can take while also earning college credit.
The focus of the camp was to share with students and their families the availability of an educational pathway through partnerships between the high school and Ivy Tech Lawrenceburg to a credential within the field of advanced manufacturing.
