(Batesville, IN) – People from near and far lined up bright and early Thursday morning outside Schmidt Bakery in Batesville to buy Cherry Thing-A-Lings.

The fritter-type donut filled with cherries and topped with a cherry glaze are available for in-store purchase between 4 a.m. and 6 p.m. every day, including Sunday, through Presidents Day on Monday.

Clem and Bertie Schmidt started what has become a tasty Presidents Day weekend tradition in the 1970s, in a nod to the tale of George Washington chopping down a cherry tree.

Last year, a record 254,880 of the sweet treats – or 21,240 dozen – were sold during online and in-person sales.
