Irene G. “Gertie” Shane, age 94 of Batesville, died Sunday, December 4, 2022 at her home. Born January 8, 1928 in Ripley County Indiana, she is the daughter of Anna (Nee: Stoud) and Joseph Voegele. She married Walter “Dikes” Shane April 19, 1947 at St. Louis Church and he preceded her in death March 30, 1984. Gertie was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and its Prayer Line, the Third Order of St. Francis, and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.
Family and faith were the cornerstones of Gertie’s life. She raised her family of six, nurtured them, encouraged them and took great pride in their accomplishments. As the grandchildren started to come along, she delighted in following their events and activities. A devout woman who prayed the rosary daily, her faith helped her through the difficult times including the death of her husband and son Patrick. Following Walt’s death, she would go to work for Mr. and Mrs. G.C. Hillenbrand and son George in 1985, taking care of their home. What started as a job turned into a wonderful friendship that continued until her death.
Gertie is survived by her daughter Annette (Ken) Swanson; sons Tom (Wilma), Dan (Millie), Guy (Becky) and Steve (Sheryl) Shane, all of Batesville; brother Tom Voegele of Milroy, Indiana; 17 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren with one on the way. In addition to her husband and son, she is also preceded in death by sisters Mary Leinberger, Virginia Suding and brothers Peter, Donald, Joseph, Eugene, Austin, John, Rev. Fritz, Hugo, Charles and Walter Voegele.
Visitation is Monday, December 12th, from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home. Funeral services follow at 11:30 a.m. at St. Louis Church with Rev. Ric Schneider OFM officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
