INDOT postpones meeting for proposed change to SR 3 and 46

Greensburg, IN — The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has postponed the meeting that was set for March 25 to hear public expression on a proposed change to the intersection of State Route 3 Bypass and State Route 46.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is considering changing how drivers enter SR 3 Bypass from State Route 46 and County Road 250 West. The new system, a variation of J-turn and “Michigan Left” turn, would eliminate left turns at the intersections so cars cannot go directly across the highway. Instead, motorists wanting to go left must first turn right, drive a short distance, then enter a left-turn lane that would allow them to make a U-Turn. Currently, this intersection is a four-way intersection with a traffic signal.

Critics may wonder why and think this seems inconvenient. According to INDOT, safety is the main reason for installing these types of turns. Closing the median eliminates direct crossing and left-turn maneuvers from the minor road, thus preventing right-angle collisions. These “T-bone” collisions are particularly deadly and damaging to drivers.
