Indiana’s Jobless Rate Rose in August

(Indianapolis, IN) – The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says the state’s unemployment rate in August was 4.2%, up from 4% in July.

By comparison, the national unemployment rate last month was also at 4.2%.

The Hoosier labor force participation rate of 62.7% in August remained equal to the national figure. This rate is the percentage of Hoosiers 16 and older who are either working or actively looking for work. Those not in the labor force include students, retirees, and adults unable to work due to disability, illness, or caring for their family’s childcare needs. Indiana’s total labor force is 3,398,064.

In August 2024, Indiana reported 2,887,100 jobs, a new private employment peak.

Industries that experienced job increases last month included:

  • Manufacturing (+ ,800)
  • Construction (+1,800)
  • Trade, Transportation & Utilities (+1,200)
  • Leisure & Hospitality (+1,100)
  • Private Education and Health Services (+1,000)

As of September 16, there were 89,103 job postings throughout the state.
