STATEHOUSE — Republicans at the Statehouse on Wednesday unveiled abortion legislation that will be considered when the special session begins Monday.
This comes after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade by a 6-3 decision, which gives states the power to pass their own abortion laws.
Senate Bill 1 would ban all abortions except in cases of rape, incest, when the mother’s life is at risk, or in the case of a fetal anomaly.
If the bill is passed and signed into law, it would go into effect on September 1.
Governor Eric Holcomb previously called a special session to return $1 Billion to Indiana taxpayers, but the abortion question was added as a result of the landmark Supreme Court decision last month.
The Governor’s Press Secretary Erin Murphy issued a statement Wednesday:
“When the General Assembly convenes next week, the more formal and public process begins. Governor Eric Holcomb will continue with his discussions with legislative leadership and members about the multiple issues before Hoosiers today, including the best way to return hard-earned tax dollars to Hoosiers in a timely, meaningful way.”
