Greensburg, In. – Organizers from the Bread of Life in Greensburg are wrapping up a unique fundraiser with an educational message.
The “Farmers Feeding the Flock” program takes donated cropland and donations to prepare the soil, plant and harvest, in this case soybeans. Merrill Smith says the fundraiser helps the community while teaching the economics of farming. The lesson includes the cost of insurance, equipment, land, seed fertilization and harvest.
Smith says the cost of the crop this year, not including the cost of the land was about $305-per-acre. When the crop is harvested it will be locally at Lowes Feed and Grain. All the proceeds will go to the Greensburg Community Bread of Life.
The Evans families of Larry & Carol and John & Krista made a land donation of 38 acres to make the project possible this year.
Greensburg Community Bread of Life is a soup kitchen serving Decatur County. It opened in August of 2002. They served 13 meals in the first month. Today, they provide between 1,800 and 2,500 meals per month to those experiencing food insecurity. Bread of Life is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
