Hulbert C. Brewer, Sr., 86, of Holton passed away at 8am, Saturday, October 5, 2019 at his home. He was born near Rogers in Wolfe County, Kentucky on September 8, 1933 the youngest of 12 children born to William and Laura Bryant Brewer. He was married to Ruby King on January 19, 1952 and his wife of 67 years survives. Other survivors include three sons William (Linda) Brewer, Hulbert C. Brewer Jr. and his companion Hallie Silverthorne, and Frank Brewer all of Holton; two daughters Teresa Sandlin of Louisville, Tennessee, and Kim (Chuck) Klein of Indianapolis; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law Ace Sandlin, 6 sisters, and 5 brothers. Mr. Brewer was an Army veteran of the Korean War where he served from 1954 to 1956 in the 101st Airborne as a paratrooper. In 1962 he and Ruby settled on their farm east of Holton where spent the remainder of his life. Hulbert was a brick mason where he worked independently as well as union. He also farmed and in retirement he spent eight years as a driver for Catch-a-Ride. Hulbert played the mandolin and he enjoyed collecting knives and watches. Hulbert was a 58 year member of the Naomi Primitive Baptist Church in Wolfe County, Kentucky, a 52 year member of the Holton Masonic Lodge, 58 year member of the Bricklayers Union, and was also a member of the Shriners and the Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 9th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Ty Choate of the Hopewell Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5pm to 8pm with the Holton Masonic Lodge conducting services at 8pm. Memorials may be given to the Cliff Hill Cemetery or the Holton Masonic Lodge in care of the funeral home.
