(Bloomington, IN) – A stretch of State Road 45 near Indiana University’s Assembly Hall is a step closer to carrying the name of one of the most iconic figures in Hoosier sports history.

The Indiana House of Representatives unanimously approved House Concurrent Resolution 4, a proposal from State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville) urging the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename the portion of State Road 45 between College Avenue and Fee Lane as “Bob Knight Memorial Way.”

The move honors the late Robert “Bobby” Montgomery Knight, the legendary IU men’s basketball coach who led the Hoosiers from 1971 to 2000. During his 29 seasons in Bloomington, Knight guided Indiana to three national championships, 11 Big Ten titles, and the program’s unforgettable 1976 unbeaten season, cementing his place in college basketball lore.

Mayfield said the timing of the vote hits especially hard for IU fans, coming as Indiana football closes in on a shot at a national championship next week. She noted a title would give the Hoosiers a rare spot in sports history — adding an undefeated football crown to a school already synonymous with unbeaten championship basketball under Knight.

The proposal now moves to the Indiana Senate. If approved by the General Assembly, INDOT would be able to move forward with the road designation and signage.
