(Milan, IN) – Milan High School has added a permanent new display honoring one of the community’s most accomplished graduates: David W. Mortara, a 1958 Milan alumnus whose career helped shape modern heart-diagnostic technology.
School staff, community members and former scholarship recipients gathered Tuesday for the dedication of the exhibit, which highlights Mortara’s life, his professional impact in electrocardiography (ECG/EKG) and the philanthropic support that has helped Milan students pursue college degrees.
After graduating from Milan, Mortara earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and later a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Illinois. He went on to become a recognized leader in ECG technology and founded Mortara Instrument in Milwaukee, a company known for developing diagnostic electrocardiography products that have been used in hospitals and clinics worldwide.
The ceremony included remarks recognizing both Mortara’s professional achievements and his long-standing commitment to education. Speakers reflected on how the scholarship established in his name has helped Milan graduates take the next step in their academic careers and has created a lasting connection between Mortara’s success and future generations of students.
The permanent display documents Mortara’s career and his contributions to education, while also recognizing scholarship recipients who have benefited from the program. The exhibit was made possible through donations from recipient families, SEI Communications and the Ripley County Community Foundation.
The display is located in the Milan High School atrium and will remain available for viewing during regular school hours, serving as a lasting reminder of how one graduate’s work and generosity continue to impact the Milan community.
