Versailles, IN—A special prosecutor has been named to look into the shooting death of a black man at the hands of a white police officer in South Bend.
Ripley County Prosecutor Richard Hertel has been appointed by a St. Joseph County judge to investigate the incident to see if any charges should be filed against South Bend police sergeant Ryan O’Neill. O’Neill shot and killed Eric Logan back on June 16th as he was responding to a call about a car thief.
O’Neill said that Logan came at him with a knife after he had approached Logan who he said was sitting in a car that didn’t belong to him. O’Neill’s body camera was not active at the time of the incident.
