Seymour, IN—A newborn baby found alive in a bag last week was wrapped in a towel. A woman out walking her dog along South Jackson Drive in Seymour discovered the infant along a fence line on Oct. 15.
Seymour Police Detective Sgt. C.J. Foster stated that there were also a couple of long strands of hair in the plastic bag. “We don’t know who they were from, but they were from someone other than the infant,” he said.
Foster said investigators will perform DNA testing on the hair strands, adding that they’re hoping it will lead to some answers. They still don’t know who the mother could be. They are trying to figure out if she was someone who lived in the Seymour area or out of town. “We reached out to area hospitals to see if anybody would have came in who would have recently had a child and asked them to notify us if anyone did come in,” Foster said.
Foster said investigators have not heard anything from area hospitals. Seymour police officers have canvassed the area and looked for surveillance video. They are packaging any evidence they’ve collected from the scene and will send it to the Indiana State Police lab. Police believe the baby girl was only two or three hours old.
As for the baby, Foster said she’s doing great. She was released from the hospital on Friday and is in foster care. Police believe the baby is from some type of Hispanic descent. There is a significant Hispanic community in the Seymour area. Police said there is a possibility that the person who abandoned the child could face charges, but they want to know all of the facts in this case and see why things happened the way they did.
