(Greensburg, IN) – The Greensburg/Decatur County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is proud to announce the recipients of their 2024 Teacher Grants, aimed at fostering innovation and enhancing educational opportunities for students in Decatur County. These grants, totaling $4,000, were awarded to four dedicated educators across Greensburg and North Decatur Jr-Sr High Schools.
Mrs. Heather Comer, of Greensburg Community High School, received funding for her Early Childhood Education Immersive Community Classroom project. Through collaboration with READI 2.0 and Lilly Endowment funds, this initiative will simulate the seven classrooms of All 4 Kids, providing students with a practical teaching environment to gain confidence before working directly with children. “Ultimately, the immersive classroom will help to prepare students for their future roles as educators by practicing their skills in a safe space,” said Mrs. Comer.
Additionally, Mrs. Annie Wilkison, of Greensburg Community High School, was awarded a grant to establish a new healthcare simulation lab on campus. Currently, the school’s simulation lab is off-site and only available to CNA students. The new lab will allow more students to explore careers in healthcare, meeting the growing demand for skilled professionals in the field. “Hands-on learning through simulation is essential for student engagement and success,” said Mrs. Wilkison.
At North Decatur Jr-Sr High School, Mrs. Megan Schildknecht secured funding for a series of immersive field trips to Dallara Race Car Manufacturer, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and Cummins Diesel Plant, aiming to expose students to the diversity and innovation within the manufacturing industry. “These experiences will showcase the intersection of manufacturing, engineering, product development, and automotive innovation,” Mrs. Schildknecht shared.
In addition, school counselors, Mrs. Barb Lecher and Mrs. Jennifer Bowling were awarded a grant to launch a sports officiating course, which will provide students with the necessary training and certification to become certified IHSAA officials. This initiative offers students a pathway to immediate employment, providing valuable work experience and financial independence to support their future goals. “By becoming certified officials, students will not only earn income but also develop professional skills that will serve them in various career paths,” said Mrs. Bowling.
These grants were made possible through the generous support of Napoleon State Bank, Decatur County Memorial Hospital, Nipro PharmaPackaging, and Honda, who continue to invest in the future of Decatur County’s workforce and education system.
“At the EDC, we are thrilled to support our educators in their efforts to inspire and equip students with valuable skills for the future.” said Emma Luttel, Project Coordinator at the Greensburg/Decatur County EDC. “It’s their passion and dedication that will make our community stronger for generations to come.”
