(Greensburg, IN) – Greensburg City Council voted 5-2 Tuesday night against the first reading of an ordinance to allow the annexation of nearly 12 acres into the city.

Christian and Karen Rust have petitioned to annex 11.76 acres along 1200 South County Road 60 East, also known as Millhousen Road, which is where they want to develop a senior housing facility.

Indianapolis-based attorney Matt Giffen represented the Rusts and asked council to approve the proposal, which was tabled last week by the Greensburg Plan Commission.

In a repeat of last week’s Plan Commission meeting, nearly a dozen residents spoke out against the idea during a nearly 50-minute public hearing.

Opponents cited increased traffic on Millhousen Road, safety concerns for St. Mary School students and other pedestrians who cross the road, lower property values, infrastructure issues, and zoning among the reasons why they’re against it.

The Plan Commission will likely take up the issue again next month and make a recommendation to council.

Councilmembers Kevin Fleetwood, Rodney King, Daryl Tressler and Vietta McKenzie voted against approval on first reading; the votes to approve came from Jamie Cain and Darrell Poling.
