GREENSBURG – City Council voted in favor of funding $40,000 toward the purchase of a homeless shelter in Greensburg.
The shelter would provide housing for those that need it while promoting opportunities for the homeless to live successfully on their own.
Keith Hipskind, president of Greensburg Transitional Living Center, requested the funding as the group looks to potentially purchase a vacant building owned by St. Mary’s Catholic Church on McKee Street, according to the Greensburg Daily News.
City Council OK’d the one-time monetary gift and the organization will look toward county government and community donations for further funding.
The newspaper reports that Hipskind told Council that the non-profit Agape Center could have sixty homeless clients this year. Local schools reported 50 students that were considered homeless last school year.
The Transitional Living Center would look to provide housing, education, financial counseling and other services to the homeless. The group will likely request funding from county government next week with hopes of providing housing as early as this winter.
