Greensburg, IN — Greensburg City Council this week passed, on 2nd reading, an ordinance to update and expand council.
The city surpassed the 10,000 population threshold in the 2000 Census, which by law required adding two council seats.
However, it’s not clear why the issue wasn’t addressed then, according to Mayor Joshua Marsh.
“We are working through the process to expand it to have a total of three at-large districts and then our current four contiguous districts that represent the city,” Marsh said. “We will be adding two at-large seats to the voting roster in 2023, and those (elected) will take office in and hold those seats starting on January 1, 2024, in the same term cycle as the other, current five city council seats”
Greensburg City Council is currently made up of Kevin Fleetwood (District 1); Vietta McKenzie (District 2); Council President Jamie Cain (District 3); Rick Emsweller (District 4), and Darrell Poling (At-Large).
Marsh says this has been on his radar since he took office in 2020, which was also when the most recent Census was conducted.
The 1st reading of the ordinance took place at a special meeting on October 4.
