(Greensburg, IN) – The Greensburg Police Department announced the death of former Police Chief Keith Gay, remembering him as a longtime officer who served the city for years and led the department in the early 2000s.

According to the department, Gay was born and raised in Greensburg. After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served from 1985 to 1989 before being honorably discharged.

After returning home, Gay joined the Greensburg Police Department in 1988 as a reserve officer, following in the footsteps of his father, Lester Gay, who also served with the department.

Gay became a full-time Greensburg police officer in 1989. He later attended the 99th session of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and graduated March 23, 1990.

Gay advanced through the ranks at GPD and served as chief of police from 2000 to 2002. He left the department in 2003.

The department noted Gay was widely known as a K-9 handler in the region, working alongside his K-9 partner, Bustin, and also served as a defensive tactics instructor and field training officer.

Funeral arrangements will be handled by Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home.
