GPD Joins Effort to Curb Impaired Driving Around Labor Day Holiday Period

(Greensburg, IN) – The Greensburg Police Department reminds you to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over as officers gear up for the annual end of summer impaired driving enforcement campaign.

Starting Friday, August 16 and running through September 2, GPD officers will join other law enforcement across the state to increase patrols and sobriety checkpoints to crack down on those driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The enforcement blitz is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through grants administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.

“‘Drive sober or get pulled over’ is more than just a warning—it’s a commitment to saving lives,” says Greensburg Police Chief Mike McNealy. “As we ramp up our enforcement efforts from August 16 to September 2, our goal is clear: prevent impaired driving and keep our roads safe. Alcohol and drug impairment continue to be major factors in traffic fatalities, and we’re dedicated to cracking down on these dangerous behaviors. Plan ahead, designate a sober driver, or use alternative transportation. Your safety and the safety of others depend on it.”

Alcohol-impaired driving continues to contribute to many deaths in Indiana. In 2023, around 20 percent  of all traffic fatalities in Indiana involved alcohol impairment. Drug-impaired driving is another major contributor to deadly crashes. In 2023, nearly a quarter of all traffic fatalities involved drug impairment.

Drivers should be safe during this Labor Day holiday by planning ahead if they intend to drink. Even if you only have one drink, designate a sober driver or use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely. Never drive impaired or let friends get behind the wheel if they’ve been drinking.
