Gary Wayne Walton passed away at his home in Rising Sun, Indiana. Gary was born in Batesville, Indiana to Rollin and Bertha (Baker) Walton on January 13, 1949. Gary was a lifelong resident of Ohio County. Gary attended Cass Union and Rising Sun Schools. Gary enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in April 1969 until April 1973. Gary’s brother Garland “Buddy” also decided the day Gary was to report for duty, that he was joining also. They were sworn in together. Gary served in Vietnam from October 1969 to October 1970 ranked at Corporal E4. Gary was proud to serve his country as a Marine and received numerous awards: National Defense Service Medal, Viet-Nam Service Medal, Viet-Nam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Mast, Good Conduct Award, and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #59 (51 years) and a member of the Southeastern Indiana Vietnam Veterans Chapter #071.
Upon returning home in April 1973, he met and later married his wife Yvonne Swanson on January 26, 1974. They celebrated 51 years of marriage. They enjoyed fun day trips, especially with Bobby and Yolanda White, and eating out with family, children, and grandchildren. Gary loved the outdoors, rabbit hunting, and sneaking in to fish on people’s ponds. He was devoted to his family and was known to be selfless and generous by all of his family members.
He retired from CGB North Bend working as a loader operator after 34 years, with the unrecognized honor of never being late one minute. After retiring he then went back to work at CHS in Melbourne, Kentucky until his declining health forced him to retire for good in 2022.
Gary is survived by his wife Yvonne, daughter Shanda Boes (Jimmy) of Rising Sun, son Terry Walton (Lora) of Greendale, grandson AJ Boes, granddaughter Avery Boes, sister Tammy Gutapfel (Brian) of Bright, and several nephews and nieces. Gary is preceded in death by parents Rollin and Bertha Walton, brother Garland “Buddy” Walton, sister-in-law Saundra Walton.
To abide by Gary’s wishes, a family service will be held at their convenience. A public military graveside will occur at the Rising Sun New Cemetery at 1:00pm, April 1st 2025.
