Franklin County Schools considering consolidation

brookville-middle-schoolFRANKLIN COUNTY, Ind. — The Franklin County School Board is considering whether or not to consolidate 7th and 8th grade from Laurel and Mount Carmel Schools to Brookville Middle School.

A committee was formed to research different options.

The committee found that the school corporation is losing students.

They stated that since each student brings in a fixed amount of money, fewer students means less money.

Declining enrollment was also flagged as an issue.

The committee came up with three options, to do nothing, to completely consolidate the 7th and 8th grades to Brookville Middle School, or to consolidate the students to Brookville Middle School, but academics only.

Extracurricular activities and athletics would stay at Mt. Carmel and Laurel.

Parents are speaking out against the proposal, bringing a petition objecting to the consolidation that has over 250 signatures from parents, grandparents, and guardians of affected students.

Superintendent Dr. Howell asked for a vote to be taken on January 9.
